I am the only Montreal pet sitter who is certified by both Pet Sitters International (PSI) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS). As others pass the exam and meet the criteria, this may change.
PSI Certified Professional Pet Sitter (CPPS)
The PSI Certified Professional Pet Sitter (CPPS) designation is achieved after passing a 125-question, 3-hour proctored exam, which includes such topics as pet care; health, sanitation and safety; and business operations. Each CPPS has:
(1) successfully passed the PSI Certification Program final exam with a score of 76 percent or above,
(2) agreed to adhere to PSI’s Recommended Quality Standards, as noted in the PSI member and renewal applications,
(3) agreed to adhere to the Member Code of Conduct and Ethics, as noted in the PSI member and renewal applications, and
(4) committed to obtaining a minimum of thirty (30) continuing education hours (CEUs) every three years to apply for the certification renewal.

NAPPS Certified Professional Pet Sitter
The NAPPS Certification Course is a broad-range and in-depth self-paced course covering all topics relevant to pet sitting, including pet care , health, nutrition and behavior for a variety of animals (cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, and exotic animals like Guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, ferrets, fish, lizards, amphibians, hermit crabs). It also includes business development and management, pet safety and a complete pet first aid course. The NAPPS Certification acknowledges that the pet sitter is a serious professional who has obtained a high level of expertise through his/her study.
A quiz is presented after each section, and an overall score of 75% or higher must be obtained in order to pass the course/exam.
NAPPS Certification is good for three (3) years. In order to maintain NAPPS Certification status, you must re-certify by either presenting evidence of a total of 30 Continued Educational Units (CEUs) in at least two out of three categories listed below:
- NAPPS Service
- Community Service
- Individual Study
